Exploration of books enhances opportunities for introduction of awareness of sounds as children become aware of letters relevant to their own lives such as the initials to their name.
Children’s later writing is based on skills and understandings which they develop as babies and toddlers.

Reading – is about children understanding & enjoying stories, books & rhymes, recognising that print carries meaning, both fiction & fact, and reading a range of familiar words & simple sentences.

Writing – is about how children build the relationship between the spoken word & how through making marks, drawing & personal writing children ascribe meaning to text& attempt to write for various purposes, – is about the ways in which children’s random marks, lines & drawings develop & form the basis of recognisable letters.
